Sasha Johnson
Anchorage School District German Immersion teacher
Rilke Schule German School
I currently teach German language and German immersion social studies to sixth grade students at Rilke Schule German School in the Anchorage School District. I have been teaching for fourteen years, with experience in college and secondary classrooms. At Rilke Schule, I use theater improvisation techniques, textual chunking, and whole-body involvement to help students make language meaningful. Outside of the classroom, I incorporate a blended learning platform online using Canvas for student homework submissions and enrichment. I currently also teach German online at Ocean County College in New Jersey, and face-to-face at Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer. I am interested in how technology can be used to help facilitate distance-learning in the language classroom as well as blended learning. This past summer, I acted as chaperone for an AATG Summer Study program in Leipzig, Germany, in which I accompanied 14 American students for three weeks as they stayed with host families, visited a German school, and toured sites in Leipzig, Weimar, Dresden and Berlin.
